Barbecue Season

Hi E:

It's that time of year where the weather is gorgeous and the wood is smoking and ... I'm not yet sick of barbecue!

N offered me either brisket or pork butt. I voted for pulled pork -- it's my favorite! N layered the pork butt with his dry rub and mustard, then smoked the pork butt with apple, pecan, and a tiny bit of mesquite.

He also made his own sauce with Jack, tomato paste, and a secret blend of spices. He cooked it down a bit more than he expected but it was tasty: a little spicy, a little sweet.

I threw together a quick chopped slaw -- sweet Walla Walla onion, green and red cabbage, horseradish, parsley, apple cider vinegar, caraway and celery seed.

On Friday I was reading through my feeds and a recipe for a potato and tomato salad caught my eye. Coincidentally the co-op had delicious multicolored local grape tomatoes. I really like this salad.

At your suggestion, I did some searching for a cocktail that used the limoncello I made back in March. Tasty Trials had a recipe for a Raspberry-Limoncello cocktail. My initial trial version was much more refreshing than the more-boozy version I made for us later (with double the liquor). I don't mind the raspberry and basil chunks in it, but they could be strained off for someone who dislikes chunkies. Here's the recipe:

Basil-Raspberry-Limoncello Cocktail
a few basil leaves, torn
4-6 raspberries
slice of lemon
1/2 ounce limoncello
1/2 ounce vodka
club soda (I like Q Club soda)
powdered sugar or fine granulated sugar (optional)

In the bottom of a DOF or highball glass, muddle the basil leaves, raspberry, and lemon slice. Add the limoncello and vodka, mix. Top off with club soda and add some sugar to taste if it needs a little bit of additional sweetness.

After dinner, we chatted a bit about yarn while the boys watched part of an episode of Game of Thrones. Then it was onto the games! N wanted to play Catan again -- I guess my winning the past three times was really bothering him!

N wanted to play Catan AGAIN

This was a frustrating game with not enough bricks to go around. But finally, N won a round of Catan. Somehow I don't think anyone will ask to play Catan this week.

After Catan, we played a round of Carcassonne. All four of us were very close, but N pulled out that win as well.

Then a quick round of Bohnanza, which N did not win! Why am I feeling like we'll end up playing G's favorite Acquire this week?
